So what's the fuss with this Dalgona Coffee? The past few days, I have been wondering what this Dalgona coffee is all about. A lot of social media influencers and some actors I follow have been sharing their take in making this DIY coffee recipe and quickly the whole digital world has joined in the bandwagon. Most especially now that people are stuck at home, bored and have been looking for something to do.
In January, the drink was spotted in an episode of Pyunstorang, a Korean TV show where celebrities compete to develop new recipes that will eventually enter the country’s convenience stores as official products. Having tried the drink himself in Macau, actor Jung Il-woo gave it the nickname “dalgona,” a Korean street snack made with sugar and baking soda. The trend was quickly picked up by Instagram users, followed by the communities on YouTube and TikTok, with variations of recipes uploaded online.

One reason why it has gained popularity is that it's very easy to make with very few ingredients we can find readily available at home. Ingredients include instant coffee, white sugar, and milk.
I am a coffee addict so I might as well join the bandwagon and make my own dalgona coffee: basically, we'll be needing 2 tablespoons each of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. And a glass of milk (hot or iced)
I whipped the mixture using hand mixer. It took me around 7 minutes at highest speed to reach the right consistency. |
We start by making the coffee whip. Mix together the instant coffee, sugar and hot water. Using a hand mixer whip it until you get a caramel-colored creamy mixture. (You can also whip it by hand, but it's not advisable. I just can't do it by hand. It's too much physical activity for me. LOL!)
Layer it on top of the milk... and that's it! Enjoy your dalgona coffee, beshies!
Note: The coffee whip is good for 2-3 glasses of milk.
Oo, alam ko! No time na para magmaganda. Ha ha. Picture agad para sa pang-malakasang woke-up-like-this feels! Cheret! |
Variations:
For a creamier taste, you can also top it with whip cream, or ice cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon!
I have read you can also do it with matcha powder instead of coffee. (This is something I have yet to discover.)
